We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want.

~Tao te Ching

Artist's

Statement

I have been a potter for over 25 years. I studied in Europe, Japan and the USA. I have always loved working with clay. I like the way it feels in my hands while I take this fluid, malleable media and transform it into a permanent beautiful object.

Today I work exclusively in "Western Style Raku" pottery. My work is best described as impressionist. It is a fusion of the ancient Japanese art form and the recent Americanization of the process. This modern adaptation of the ancient process yields vibrant objects of ceramic art.

The colors have such depth and brilliance that they are often mistaken for metal or glass. The spontaneity of the work's appearance belies the necessary adherence to the rigid and unforgiving laws of chemistry, physics and natural science required for a successful outcome.

The Raku process is both exciting and unpredictable. Yet even with a high mortality rate for the pots, wonderful surprises await following each kiln firing.

The jewel like surfaces and liquid shapes appeal to the youthfulness and unconstrained nature of our souls.

My Mission

To create artistic objects that delight the imagination and appreciation for that which is delicate, yet rugged, energetic and free flowing
